This book was created for use by the chronic pain patient. It is an excellent resource that can be utilized by both the patient and his/her provider, to collaboratively work to help sufferers cope with and manage their chronic pain. Several chapters focus on common pain problems, and their possible causes and treatments. This resource takes a comprehensive approach to treating pain, providing chapters on psychological techniques for managing pain, vocational rehabilitation, and exercise.

What type of patient would benefit most from this book?
Any patient with chronic pain, particularly those wanting to learn more about the pain condition, and how to handle its many manifestations. Patients who are ready to take charge of their condition, and are willing to practice the coping strategies, will definitely find this book beneficial. Scenarios from pain patients are presented, and this may help others understand that they are not alone.

How would you recommend a patient use this book to enhance their care?
This book can be used in part or in whole. Patients will certainly benefit from reading the chapters that focus on coping strategies, and pain and stress, as well as the effects of good nutrition and sleep on pain. A number of activities and daily logs are provided to motivate the patient towards taking control to improve their condition.

Are there any features or sections of the book you liked most or least?
This book is comprehensive in that it provides both an overview of pain while also exploring the real issue of its great impact on patients’ lives. Features that people will benefit greatly from include the practical methods that are presented to help reduce pain severity as well as the chapter focusing on “Dealing with others” in their daily lives. Of special note is the section providing information on pain centers and support groups.
